Materials and Tools:
- Cricut machine
- Cricut Design Space software
- SVG
- Cutting mat
- Heavy duty Cardstock
- Hot Glue or adhesive
- Food grade Wooden or acrylic dowels or skewers
Dinosaur SVG (available for multiple ages)
An SVG file designed for creating cake toppers. Users can upload this SVG file into their Cricut design software, where they can customize or resize the design as needed.
I create all of my cake topper SVG files as single layer files to ensure a straight forward and effortless process. No need to weld or slice , only resize the design to fit your cake and you’re ready to cut!
CARD STOCK PAPER
When creating a cake topper, it’s important to use the thickest and sturdiest card stock available.
I always use Michael’s “Recollections” brand glitter card stock for all of my cake toppers.
Hobby lobby has a similar brand called “Paper Studio”, but the weight is slightly lighter. I only use the “Paper Studio” brand for embellishing cake toppers, but not for the cake topper itsself.
Regular non-glitter card stock is not think enough on its own to create a cake topper. Unless the card stock is doubled up, or attached to a thicker material, the cake topper is not going to be strong enough. It will ultimately flop over or break.
Cricut Maker
The Cricut Maker is suitable for a wide range of users, from beginners to experienced crafters. The Cricut maker is the machine I have used to sell over 15k cake toppers over on Etsy.
Some of the materials that the Cricut Maker can cut include: Paper and Cardstock, Vinyl, Fabric, Leather, Balsa Wood and BasswoodChipboard, Foam, Acetate, Magnet Sheets and Cork.
Cake Topper Sticks
My favorite skewers are these clear acrylic rods found on Amazon. I love the polished look and that the clear acrylic doesn’t take away from the cake topper design.
Wooden, food-grade skewers found at Hobby Lobby and on Amazon. The Michaels and Amazon skewers are shorter and thinner than the standard skewers found at the grocery store. They make the perfect cake topper sticks!
Standard Cricut Cutting Mat
When working with glitter paper cardstock, the standard Cricut mat is the one to use. If you have an old mat that needs some TLC visit here for a complete Cricut mat cleaning guide and tips for prolonging your Cricut mat life.

Assembly
1. Add Support:
- Attach food grade wooden skewer or acrylic rods to the back of your cake topper to provide support. Make sure they are securely attached using hot glue.
- I’ve used food grade wood skewers for years but my new favorite are the acyclic rods. Here are my go to.
2. Place on Cake:
- Once your cake topper is assembled and any glue is dry, carefully place it on top of your cake using the wooden skewer or acrylic rod for support.
As you can see crafting a dinosaur cake topper with your Cricut machine is an easy and rewarding project that adds a personalized touch to any celebration.
Experiment with different colors, SVG’s and sizes to tailor the cake topper to the specific theme or occasion. Whether you’re planning a birthday party, a baby shower, or any other special event, a paper cake topper crafted with your Cricut is sure to be a unique and eye-catching centerpiece.
