Welcome to back-to-school week! Over the next couple of days, I’ll be sharing how I’m preparing for the kids (and myself) to head back to school next month. Not only will I be sharing my tried and true tips for organization and a memorable experience for the kids, but I’m also running my annual giveaway! One lucky Sprinkled with Paper subscriber will win a custom homework caddie with tons of supplies to help get you ready for the upcoming school year! You’ll find details on how to enter the giveaway at the bottom of this post.
It’s Back-to-School Time!
This year (for the first time ever!) Madison and Jack will both be attending the same school. Madison will be entering the 4th grade and Jack will be starting Kindergarten!
Back-to-school time is always an adjustment. The lazy mornings, open schedules, and late nights of summer are replaced by early morning alarms, after school activities, homework, and early bed times.
The adjustment is especially dramatic when you have a Kindergartner in full-time school for the first time. Everything is new, they are extra tired those first couple of weeks, and getting out the door on time each day can be a real struggle.
Being as prepared and organized as possible can definitely be your saving grace!
Homework Station
One way I like to prepare is by setting up a homework station caddy. Homework time can be extra stressful those first couple of weeks, not only for the kids, but also for us moms. Having everything we could possible need is one spot, is such a huge help!
Madison has a desk in her room, but she always ends up doing her homework at the dining room table. It makes it easier for me to help her in the afternoon while I’m preparing dinner, and she has plenty of space to spread out.
To help minimize the clutter, I’m converting the homework station in her room to a portable caddy that she can use to keep everything organized. That way, she can easily move her workspace to the dining room if she needs to. I’m also setting up a caddy for Jack that’s specific for his kindergarten work.
What’s included in our homework caddy:

- Wide ruled notebook paper
- Pencils
- Markers
- Crayons
- Colored pencils
- Glue sticks
- Scissors
- Index cards
- Pencil sharpener
All of our supplies are nicely organized in a plastic caddy and paper tray, I found at Target. I also picked up a pencil box to hold all of the markers and colored pencils, as well as a box for the index cards. These will also be kep in the caddy for easy access.
TIP: Pick up extra supplies now that you can replenish thoughout the year. School supplies are always less expensive this time of year, so take advantage of those deals!
After setting up our lunchbox station last year, I was inspired to look for other ways I could minimize clutter using functional, mobile systems. I wanted to keep a set of supplies in a closet in a way that was easy to organize and restock, but that was accessible, mobile and functional for the kids.
I found these plastic caddys in the office supply section at Target, and knew they would be perfect for the kids! Since I stock up on supplies this time of year, anything not going with them to school, or in the homework caddys at home,. are tucked away in a storage tote. That way, I can keep things tidy by stocking only what’s needed and being used, and replenish when supplies run low.
