These simple DIY Stormtrooper and lightsaber cupcake toppers are sure to be a huge hit at your next Star Wars party!
Our little Jack recently turned 4. Naturally, we threw him a “May the 4th be with you” birthday party.
To keep his party simple, we decided to have it at a splash pad at the park (it gets hot here in June). We played shoot the Stormtroopers with Nerf guns, we had a Darth Vader pinata, and the kids ran around with pool noodle lightsabers (click here for my tutorial on those).
The kids had a blast, and it was a perfect San Diego June birthday.
As for the food, I also kept it simple. We served Costco pizza, chips, watermelon and drinks. For dessert, we had the best storebought cupcakes! Seriously. I’m not a huge cupcake fan, but these vanilla cupcakes with whipped cream frosting were super yummy!
Hey, there’s no shame in my storebought cupcake game, especially when personalizing them with a handmade, themed topper. Since Jack LOVES marshmallows, Stormtrooper marshmallow toppers were the obvious choice.
While searching for a black Food Writer Edible Ink Marker at Michael’s, I spotted shiny blue pipe cleaners. Instantly, I knew that with a little crafting, they would make the perfect lightsaber to go with the Stormtrooper marshmallows.
Sidenote, having recently watched the Star Wars movies (for the first time ever), I now realize Stormtroopers carry blasters, not lightsabers. But, in the words of Obi-wan Kenobi, blasters are “[s]o uncivilized”.
My step-by-step instructions for creating marshmallow Stormtrooper cupcake toppers and pipe cleaner lightsabers can be found below.

Supplies Needed
Large Marshmallows // Black Edible Marker // Blue Shiny Pipe Cleaners // Silver Duct Tape
STEP ONE: Draw stormtrooper faces onto marshmallows using an black edible ink marker. We drew a line around the top of the marshmallow, upside down triangles for the eyes, an upside down ‘V’ for the nose, and three small lines below for the mouth. We also drew three lines on each side for where the ears would be.
STEP TWO: Cut shiny blue pipe cleaners to 2.5 inches long. Since pipe cleaners come in 10-inch segments, I was able to make four light sabers for every pipe cleaner.
STEP THREE: Cut duct tape and wrap the bottom of the pipe cleaners. I cut the duct tape down the middle to make the width smaller, making each strip about 3/4 inch long by 1/2 inch high.
STEP FOUR: Place one Stormtrooper marshmallow and one pipe cleaner light saber onto cupcakes.
I found these Stormtrooper and light saber cupcake toppers to be incredibly easy to make, and they were a huge hit at the party! If you decide to make your own, I would love to see them!
